- Sun Thorn Nerite snails are similar to Zebra Thorn Nerite snails in that their shells have small spikes protruding from them, but they grow 2 to 3 times as large. Some Sun Thorn Nerite snails also feature that black and yellow spiral pattern, while others come in colors like brown and olive green. Nerite Snails are believed to be the single best snail in the aquarium hobby for wiping off of aquarium glass, aquatic plants, and tank decorations. They also clear your aquarium tank substrate to keep it the correct color. These freshwater snails are peaceful and safe to keep with any nonaggressive live fish, aquarium shrimp, and freshwater plants (such as a Marimo Moss Ball, java moss, etc). “Nerite Snail” is sometimes misspelled as Nerita Snail. Sun Thorn Nerite snails hail from the Indo-Pacific region. These snails are on the small side, though not as tiny as Zebra Thorn Nerites — their shells range in size from ½ to 1 inch in diameter. Their small size makes them perfect for the nano or micro aquarium. They only are perfect for plant tanks. Known as being low-maintenance and hardy, these are great for beginners and professional aquarium keepers alike. We recommend keeping the water line relatively low and spaced far from your aquarium rim, as this snail will occasionally climb up beyond the water line. Nerite Snails do not tolerate water with high nitrate levels.
