- After the publication of his last book of seventy-five personal essays, author Isak Paster believed his writing days were complete. But hit by more tragedy, he returned to writing as a way to make sense of the helplessness he felt in surrendering to life’s absurdities. Dr. Paster uses the metaphor of baseball, especially the role of its bullpen, to characterize the thrust behind the writing of these new essays: they offer relief to his feeling of being depleted, and allow him to reflect back to earlier times in the game when he still had mastery over the challenges he faced. As in his previous personal essays, Paster uses these personal events and struggles to examine wider psychological and sociological forces that we all come up against, including living with fake narratives, needing to reminisce and feel nostalgic, holding on to boundaries that define our reality, and yearning to live within a community of intimate and enduring relationships.
