- Amos is one of the twelve minor prophets in the Hebrew Bible. The book is a collection of prophetic messages that primarily address social injustice, religious corruption, and impending judgment on Israel and its neighbors. Who Was Amos? Amos was a shepherd and a fig tree farmer (Amos 7:14), not a professional prophet or someone trained in the prophetic schools. He was from Tekoa, a small town in Judah, the southern kingdom (Amos 1:1). His background as a layperson who received a divine calling makes his prophetic ministry particularly notable. Amos' Calling as a Prophet Amos’ calling was unique because: • He was called directly by God: In Amos 7:15, Amos states, "The Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’" 4• He was an outsider: Unlike many prophets who came from prophetic or priestly families, Amos was a simple shepherd and farmer, not part of the religious establishment. • He was sent to Israel: His primary focus was on Israel (the northern kingdom), even though he was from Judah. Problems Addressed in the Book Amos addresses several key issues: • Injustice and oppression: The wealthy and ruling classes exploit the poor and vulnerable. • Religious hypocrisy: People perform religious rituals but neglect justice and righteousness. • Corruption and moral decay: Widespread corruption in leadership and society. • Impending divine judgment: Amos warns of destruction and exile due to these sins, emphasizing that mere religious observance cannot substitute for justice and ethical conduct.
