- In the 1970s, the world's governments faced unprecedented energy demand, and polluting power plants were built everywhere to meet this demand. Year after year, the pollution they cause is increasing and no one has done anything to reduce it. Now the effects of this pollution have become too great and humanity is beginning to recognize that we must cover our energy needs through clean energy sources. Companies looking for clean, sustainable energy are encouraged to propose projects that provide the necessary energy without polluting the environment. Regional governments are prepared to finance these projects and invest in their implementation. If the pollution is not stopped, the game is over for all of us. In the CO2 game, each player is the manager of an energy company that responds to the government's questions for new, environmentally friendly power plants. The goal is to stop the increase in pollution while meeting the increasing demand for renewable energy – and of course benefit from it. You need enough knowledge, money and resources to build these clean power plants. Energy summits will promote global awareness and enable companies to pass on their know-how and learn even more from others. In the CO2 area, each region has a certain number of carbon emission certificates (CEPs) at the beginning. These CEPs are granted by the United Nations and must be issued when the region needs to install the energy infrastructure for a project or build a fossil fuel power plant. CEPs can be bought and sold in a market and their price fluctuates over the course of the game. Through money, CEPs, green power plants, UN objectives, business goals, and expertise, you get extraction points (VPs) that represent your company's reputation – and having the best reputation is the goal of the game… in addition to saving the planet, of course.
