- Ed Ryder needs to get away from his teaching job at Big Pine Junior College in California and get a new job somewhere else. Anywhere else. Just not in Centralia, CA, home of BPJC. On a flight to the job interview at Eastern Virginia University, Ryder sits next to, and inadvertently offends, a Voodoo loa, a spiritual being who just happens to be taking the plane as a lark. The loa, Papa Legba, decides to get revenge by casting a spell on Ryder to ruin his day. The story follows Ryder around campus as he interviews with the various odd people who seem to populate the EVU campus, from over-caffeinated professors to beautiful students to 7-foot-tall deans. But Ryder can't get Paula, the attractive flight attendant, out of his mind.
