- An imposing lighthouse stands near the port of Liverpool, reaching seven storeys high with a black, wrought-iron winding staircase that leads to the lamp room at the very top. In 1894, Elizabeth Williams took over as Lighthouse Keeper, and was assisted by her youngest daughter, Dora. The lighthouse was a labour of love for both mother and daughter, following Elizabeth’s husband’s untimely death. At only six years old, Dora had the knowledge and character of a much older girl, and with her dedication and endurance, she helped her mother recover from a near-fatal accident and assisted in saving ships from being ransacked and sunk by pirates. Keeping the lighthouse beacon lit in those days was staggeringly hard work as it meant Elizabeth, a woman in her forties, had to carry huge bags of coal up 130 steps to keep the flame shining throughout the night. With the hindrance of smugglers and buccaneers, this often meant protecting Dora as well as her beloved home, and when tragedy struck one night, leaving Elizabeth seriously injured, it was the old method of semaphore flags, Dora’s knowledge, and their friend Brian, that eventually got the attention of the keepers at the nearby Bidston Lighthouse. But all was not as it seemed… This is the story of Dora, depicting her mischievous and childlike humour, along with her bravery and loyalty, capturing some wonderfully enchanting moments and a little girl’s unforgettable personality.
