- For years, Jason Clayborn, has been writing hits for a who’s who in gospel music, ranging from Hezekiah Walker to VaShawn Mitchell. He’s also recorded a handful of independent albums over the course of his career, but now releases the first set with his Louisville, Kentucky based urban gospel choir, The Atmosphere Changers. On GOD MADE IT BEAUTIFUL, Clayborn and his choir showcase a broad spectrum of colorful ensemble sounds throughout the thirteen exhilarating tracks. His teenage daughter, Najiya, opens the proceedings in a sweet soprano on the inspiring introduction track. Seamless vocals and dramatic techniques are well executed throughout the set by the twenty (20) member group. The group’s seasoned performances are showcased on fiery up-tempo tracks such as “Creator,” “Bless That Wonderful Name” and the current radio single, “You’re All I Need,” which features the legendary Hezekiah Walker. Clayborn also revives the art of chorale singing and its emphasis on three and/or four-part harmonies as displayed on the simply majestic ballads “God Made It Beautiful” and “Peace Grace and Mercy.” At the heart of these sessions is Clayborn’s soulfully raspy vocals which add hardy grit to songs such as “Send Me” and the old school soul-styled groove, “U Love Me.” Throughout, Clayborn also shares the mic with an armful of talented guest vocalists such as the husky-voiced, Daria Raymore, and the belter, Dominique “Joy” Thompson. The project closes with the Jazzy, horn-rimmed track “Walk With Me,” which was written by his mother Jocelyn Clayborn and performed by her group, Christ Connection, thirty years ago. The updated version of the song is the perfect coda to an album that celebrates the gospel choir sound with a fresh balance of vintage and contemporary styles.
