- This recording of “Manon Lescaut” is Jussi Bjoerling’s show. There is hardly a page of the opera that is not touched by his poetic intelligence or his immaculate sense of line. Again and again phrases that seem rather ordinary in the mouths of some other tenors acquire meaning and make his Des Grieux a character who changes and grows over the course of the opera at least as much as Manon does. The whole role is sung with glorious tone and marvelous style. Bjoerling has no competitors when it comes to this role; this is unquestionably the best recording ever yet of Des Grieux. Albanese is obviously keenly aware of the changes in Manon's character as scene succeeds scene, and her vocal acting is touchingly expressive. Her voice is up to the demands of the part: powerful when needed and fragile-sounding when appropriate. She is affecting and involved throughout; this is a masterful portrayal. There is also a full-voiced and characterful Lescaut from Merrill and a mercifully non-caricatured, indeed dignified and formidable Geronte from Calabrese. Perlea keeps the opera moving (a little too swiftly, perhaps, in the wonderfully sung Act 2 duet), and accompanies very sympathetically.
