- Paul Manfredi, a young journalist who does not lack charm, nor culture, nor beauty, is surrounded by the most attractive women of Rome. His weaknesses, is married women that are older than him, with the sole purpose of enjoying their pleasure. He was never been in love and indeed shuns that feeling, showing a sense of bitter irony or even caustic. No real moral force drives him along a route he does not believe in, until one day, while in Madrid for an expertise on a painting by Goya, in the hall of the Prado Museum, he sees a woman who will change his life and his materialistic concept of love forever. She is a theater actress, a superb interpreter of the plays by Luigi Pirandello, hailed by audiences and critics, supported by a natural talent that allows her to ignore rules and standard performance techniques. She loves to be accompanied by younger lovers. But the main character is him, his reflections on love, and the constant questions that arise out of a feeling defined by those around him, a whim of his imagination. Instead, for Paul she becomes reality and chases “the theater lady” until he is exasperated. Finally, she too will surrender. Three characters revolve around him: his mother, his friend, who he can always count on and the husband of the theater lady. It’s an overwhelming passion with an unpredictable conclusion.
