- I have been drawing, painting, and writing about airplanes for the last sixty years, and the C-135 has always just been “there”….not ignored, but not exactly remarkable. I have even been an observer on at least two KC-135 flights, where the airplanes taking on fuel were the primary focus. (The Thunderbirds F-16s on one and the SR-71 on the other.) The KC-135 was always in the background, passing gas on combat missions from Vietnam to the Gulf Wars. The C-135 is a rather straight forward design, unremarkable in its appearance. But appearances can be deceiving, and the C-135 is one of the most remarkable airplanes in history. It was originally conceived as an aerial refueler, and continues in that mission over seven decades after its first flight. That original design has proven to be so adaptable that no less than a dozen different versions were adapted for special missions, from reconnaissance to VIP transport, including presidential travel. The many iterations of the 135 provide a rich panoply of markings and modificatons, shown here in dozens of color photos, line drawings, illustrations, and flight manual pages.
