- The Mudtools Polymer Pottery Ribs Shape 3 is the wide-sweep workhorse of the Mudtools rib line. At 5 inches across, it was purpose-built for potters who throw large — big bowls, platters, vases, and wide open forms where you need a rib that covers ground fast and leaves a clean, smooth surface behind. What sets Mudtools apart is the material. This isn't off-the-shelf rubber or a repurposed kitchen spatula — it's a proprietary polymer engineered for the demands of wet clay. It won't crack, won't develop burrs, and actually gets better with use as the surface burnishes to a glassy smoothness. The Shape 3 comes in four flexibility levels, each color-coded: Red (Very Soft) for gentle contouring and thin walls, Yellow (Soft) for general throwing and smoothing, Green (Medium) for potters who want a rib that holds its shape under pressure, and Blue (Firm) for aggressive shaping and compressing. Michael Sherrill, the designer behind Mudtools, keeps the Green and Blue close when working on larger pieces. Beyond the wheel, the Shape 3 pulls its weight in hand-building and sculpture — the wide face is excellent for blending coils, smoothing slabs, and refining broad curved surfaces.
