- This book describes the genealogy and family heritage of the author’s parents--William August Duvel (1916-1965) and Mary Florence (Hammers) Duvel (1916-living). The author’s intent is to create a narrative that is accessible to future Duvel generations, especially young people, so they might understand who they are and where they came from. The book begins with a summary of the Duvel family lineage, identifying basic genealogical information about the author and his siblings, their children and grandchildren, and three generations of their ancestors, i.e., parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The following chapter describes the origins of the Duvel family in America. It explains where the Duvel immigrant ancestors came from, when they got here, why they came, and where they settled in America. It also provides a brief biography of the very first immigrant ancestors who arrived from England in the 17th century and from Germany, at the beginning of the 18th century. The next chapters describe the genesis of the Duvel English heritage dating from 1635 and the origins of the Duvel ancestors from Germany in 1710. A short section summarizes the Duvel ancestors’ experiences while serving in the state militias and the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The final chapters provide short biographical narratives of each of the author’s parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. The book contains numerous location maps of European hometowns and American immigrant settlements as well as many family photos dating as far back as 1850. A robust Appendix contains a detailed pedigree chart for the author that provides the names and dates and locations of birth and death of 15 generations of Duvel ancestors.
