- He was a black man from Tennessee and they were three white teenagers from Iowa who killed him and took the only thing he ever treasured - his great grandfather's slave tag. His family never heard from him again. The year was 1940. Sixty years later a college grad student stumbles upon the unreported crime, decides to investigate it and quickly becomes immersed in its complexity. Joined by his college girlfriend, they eventually identify the victim and his assailants, one of whom they are amazed to learn is still living - a Catholic priest - who still has the slave tag in his possession. Urged on by this guilt-ridden man, the students accept the obligation to return the tag to the victim's family - if they can only find them. Research leads them into the Deep South where they encounter a colorful collection of characters and embark on an adventure they could have have imagined.
