The TSL2591 light sensor is an advanced digital light sensor suitable for use in a wide range of light conditions. Compared to low cost CdS cells, this sensor is more accurate allowing for precise lux calculations and can be configured with different gain/timing ranges to detect light up to 88,000 lux at a flying distance of 188 lux. It contains both infrared and full spectrum diodes to measure infrared, full spectrum or human visible light respectively. The TSL2591 light sensor has a massive 600 million:1 dynamic range. Note that in contrast to the previous TSL2561, the 7-bit I2C address (0x29) of the sensor cannot be changed. The board has a voltage regulator and can operate from 3.3V-5.0V. The built in ADC device can be exploited with any microcontroller, even if it does not have analog inputs. Active sensing takes 0.4 mA and in power down mode it takes less than 5 µA. The device has extremely low current consumption, making it ideal for low power data logging systems.
