(C8H7N3O2) CAS Number 521-31-3 Molecular Weight 177.16 Luminol is a chemical that exhibits chemiluminescence, with a blue glow, when mixed with an appropriate oxidizing agent. Luminol is a white-to-pale-yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in most polar organic solvents, but insoluble in water. To exhibit its luminescence, luminol must be activated with an oxidant. Usually, a solution containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxide ions in water is used as the activator. In a laboratory setting, the catalyst used is often potassium ferricyanide. Often used for the detection of oxidants (commonly blood), this makes the chemical a perfect fit in any educational or research lab dealing with forensics or chemistry.
