The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is one of the two species of elephants found in the world, with the other being the Asian elephant. African elephants are known for their impressive size, distinctively large ears, and long trunks. They are native to various regions in Africa and are further divided into two subspecies: the African forest elephant and the African savanna elephant. Size: African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. Adult males can reach heights of up to 13 feet (4 meters) at the shoulder and weigh between 10,000 to 13,000 pounds (4,500 to 6,000 kilograms). Females are typically smaller than males. Ears: Their ears are large and have a distinct shape resembling the continent of Africa. They serve various functions, including regulating body temperature and enhancing their sense of hearing. Trunk: The trunk of an African elephant is a versatile and elongated structure formed from the fusion of the upper lip and nose. It is used for a wide range of activities, including feeding, drinking, communication, and manipulation of objects. Tusks: Many African elephants, especially males, have long, curved ivory tusks. These tusks are actually elongated incisor teeth and are highly sought after in the illegal ivory trade, leading to significant conservation concerns. Habitat: African elephants are found in diverse habitats across Africa, including savannas, forests, wetlands, and deserts. They are known to be highly adaptable to different environments. Diet: They are herbivores, primarily feeding on grasses, leaves, bark, fruits, and other vegetation. An adult elephant can consume hundreds of pounds of food each day. Social Structure: African elephants are known for their complex social structures. They often live in family groups led by a matriarch, who is usually the oldest and most experienced female. Males tend to be more solitary or form temporary groups called bachelor herds.
