If not, then move on to the next-largest monofilament to accurately access the degree of sensitivity loss. Monofilaments are available in 20 sizes, which are determined by both size and force. Size is measured in grams and force is calculated by the pressure applied when the monofilament presses against the skin. Monofilaments have a color-coded sensation system for easy clarification of results. Tools are green, blue, purple or red to indicate a unique category of sensation loss. An inability to feel the force of the green nylon monofilaments is normal, while blue signifies diminished light touch, purple is diminished sensation and red is loss of protective sensation.
