- Mastering Statistics Using SPSS is a complete 17-chapter introduction to statistics for the social sciences. It is intended primarily for a two-semester course in statistics and research methods, but with some chapter omissions, it is completely appropriate for a basic one-semester course in applied statistics. It is predicated on the assumption that students can develop a strong conceptual mastery of basic statistical principles and methods with only a very modest background in mathematics. To that end, the text provides very detailed verbal explanations for all statistical concepts and formulas, clarifies important concepts using pictures and graphs, and uses realistic and engaging examples to explain how different statistical procedures work. The book is written in a friendly, conversational style that says to the student, “there’s nothing here that you can’t learn.” The text uses SPSS Version 30.0 for all data analyses. It includes a very extensive ”how to” introduction to SPSS in Chapter 3, in which two simple data analysis problems are used to teach students how to use SPSS to create and modify data files, select subsets of data for analysis, carry out simple univariate and bivariate analyses, and format output tables and graphs to make them presentation ready. Subsequent chapters on different statistical tests include detailed explanations for carrying out and interpreting those tests in SPSS. For clarity of presentation of SPSS screenshots and statistical output, the text is printed in color. Any student with even modest computer skills can teach her/himself to use and interpret SPSS with minimal or no instructor assistance. Every chapter is followed by a large number of short-answer questions that give the student immediate feedback concerning her/his mastery of the material and several realistic data analysis problems that require the use of the SPSS procedures that were introduced in the chapter. Here are the 17 chapters in the text: 1. Basic Concepts 2. Describing Data 3. Getting Started with SPSS 4. Standard Scores & Normal Distributions 5. Pearson Correlation 6. Multiple Linear Regression 7. Partial Correlation 8. Basic Probability 9. Sampling Distributions & Statistical Inference 10. Single-Sample Inference 11. Two-Sample Inference 12. Analysis of Variance 13. Two-Way ANOVA 14. Higher-Order ANOVA 15. Repeated Measures ANOVA 16. Frequency Analysis 17. Psychological Scales
