- This textbook offers a first course in probability and Bayesian statistics designed for students having a calculus background who might wish to commit just one semester to learn about the field, and continue on to further study if captivated by the subject – which often happens! The goal is to introduce students to probability, statistics, and data analysis within a single semester, making effective use of calculus and computing. Aside from assumed familiarity with calculus, this is an introductory course: no prior background in probability, statistics, or computer programming is needed. Our aim is to reach some depth in the subject, learn important theory and methodogy, and understand how it all works. This aim is facilitated by taking a Bayesian approach that develops Statistics as a conceptually clear application of Probability Theory. Typical introductions to Statistics have not treated the subject this way, but there are good reasons for doing so, as I hope you will agree when you read this book!
