- Frank Gardner grew up in the hard-rock mining town of Butte, Montana. His family legacy was in mining and from the minute he stepped foot into school, his family implored, “Don’t get trapped in the mines Frank. Do something with your life, being a miner isn’t where its at.” After losing his father and returning home from college to help care for his family, Frank returned to the mines. His legacy would not be the same as the three generations of miners prior to him. Instead, Frank would become the man who stewarded the “End of an Era” for the Anaconda Company and also become the driving force behind the re-birth of mining in Butte. Many locals have dubbed him as the “Man Who Saved Mining in Butte”. Known as the Gibraltar of Unionism, Butte and its mining history are inextricably linked to unions, strikes and the birth of the labor movement in the nation. So how did Frank Gardner succeed in reopening a mine that the Anaconda Company had abandoned, as a union-free workplace? Follow Frank’s path growing up in 1940’s Butte and working through the modern era of mining in Butte, Montana in his memoir Deep Enough.
