- The C language created by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie has evolved from C to C++ to C# to MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes). We know from experience that learning MFC and the C’s as one project is a very efficient process. The process is efficient in the sense that there is no point learning facts in one language that have been overridden by facts in another version of the language. Furthermore, in our experience, learning a language is unnecessarily complicated by injection of qualifiers, variations on a theme, little tidbits, and other information all of which DOES NOT MATTER on a first reading. This is why we avoid cluttering the conversation with the usual zillion details. Instead we jump in the water and use clearly written short programs. Consequently we believe the learning process is significantly simplified.We start with most of the various kinds of statements you can enter into a program (Chapters 4 to 16). Then we create several short programs that show how to use some of the MFC apparatus (Chapters 17 to 24). MFC classes and functions replace many C, C++, and C# functions and classes. Consequently even beginners like us with some programming experience can go directly to MFC, and save a lot of time and energy. Programming with MFC allows you to work at the top of the C hierarchy, while avoiding the limitations of the C’s. We say beginners like us, because learning how to program in any language is an endless task. Ultimately this is about how to use Windows MFC and Visual Studio C++ to write programs using windows without knowing how to write the complex code that produces the windows. The MFC/Visual Studio/C++ combination immensely simplifies the writing of any program that uses one or more windows.
