- Dan Fleming, white and Ben West, black were born in 1943. Ben's mother, Rebecca, was "Nanny" to Dan while Dan's mother worked as a welder in the shipyards of Savannah, Georgia during World War II. Rebecca brought Ben with her each day, crossing busy Bay street which separated the two government housing projects in segregated Savannah. Dan and Ben became best friends as young children, realizing that they had one thing in common which separated them from the other children....God-given foot speed. As each family left the housing projects to live in segregated communities, Dan and Ben were separated at nine years of age, sadly thinking that they would never see each other again. After eight years apart, however, it was their gift of foot speed that brought them together again as high school athletes. Both young men were superior athletes hoping for professional careers. Each suffered serious injuries which ended those hopes at an early age.They would remain best friends for life as their chosen business careers came together for mutual success in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ben and Dan were brought up in homes of discipline...where education was valued, hard work was naturally expected and love for each other was practiced. The parents of each had a trusting faith that God has a plan for each of us...a plan much greater that one we could envision for ourselves. It is a plan that God will work out in His own time as we live out our lives in His will. Ben earned an MBA from Vanderbilt University while coaching football in Nashville. He began selling cars for a new car dealership in Nashville with dreams of one day owning his own dealership. Ben worked his way up to Sales Manager and then General Manager, thoroughly learning the new car business. Ford Motor Company planned to establish a new dealership in Chattanooga and Ben was given the opportunity to buy it. Dan and his wife, Amy, ended up in Chattanooga, also. Dan worked in the advertising business and started his own agency, specializing in new car dealerships. Ben's new car dealership becomes very successful and he earns the reputation as one of Chattanooga's most popular and recognizable citizens. He is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990 as a conservative Republican, with Dan as his campaign manager and most trusted adviser. While Dan Is helping his friend in Congress, he is surprised to learn that a family secret his father had shared with him many years ago is revealed to him with more clarity. It is a story linking Dan's uncle's murder to the assassination of President Kennedy, and now it impacts the future of our country. Together Dan and Ben find a way to set our country back on a Constitutional path that would eliminate our government's huge debt, preserving America for our children and grandchildren.
