  • “I dare you to ask the hardest questions—Who am I? Why am I anxious? Does my life matter?—and then points us to the One who gives those questions their answer.” —Søren Kierkegaard (paraphrase) Existentialism and Christian faith might sound like two worlds apart. One springs from 19th‑ and 20th‑century philosophers wrestling with despair, freedom, and meaning; the other from the ancient Gospel calling us into relationship with a living God. Yet the more I’ve taught and written on Søren Kierkegaard and Martin Buber, the more I’ve discovered how deeply their insights resonate with Jesus’ own invitation: ‘Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’ (Matthew11:28). I admit that when I tell people I’m an existentialist, they often look puzzled—or even amused. To them, ‘existentialism’ usually means Nietzsche’s god‑is‑dead nihilism or Sartre’s atheistic freedom. It feels paradoxical, almost a contradiction in terms, to label myself both a follower of Christ and a student of existential thought. But in the Christian tradition of Kierkegaard and Buber, existentialism isn’t godless despair; it’s the honest confrontation with our deepest anxieties and the joyful leap into God’s presence. This is why I embrace the name: because real philosophy—and real faith—must help us live, not merely think, in the light of God’s resurrection hope. This chapter lays the groundwork for our journey. We’ll: Define existentialism by tracing its core themes—freedom, anxiety, meaning, choice, and authenticity—and show why these matter not just in philosophy halls but in everyday spiritual life.Explore its theological significance, unpacking how Kierkegaard’s “leap of faith” and Buber’s I–Thou encounter equip Christians to minister to anxious, postmodern souls.Compare Western and Eastern approaches to life’s ultimate questions, so we appreciate the universality of human longing and the distinct contribution Christian faith brings.Map our course through history, key thinkers, and practical applications—so you’ll know where we’re headed and why each step matters for your own ministry or personal growth.
