- I first learned about the power of quartal harmony from my mentor at Berklee College of Music, John D. Thomas. John was an incredible guitarist and educator, known for his deep understanding of jazz harmony and innovative approach to the instrument. His guidance shaped the way I think about harmony and helped me explore new sounds on the guitar. His influence, combined with my experiences performing and teaching, has laid the foundation for the concepts I’m sharing in this book.Throughout my career, I’ve developed these ideas by experimenting, listening, and figuring out what works best for the guitar. McCoy Tyner and Larry Young have been two of my biggest influences when it comes to quartal harmony. Both musicians used this approach to push the boundaries of jazz harmony, taking their playing outside the key and seamlessly bringing it back in—creating tension, release, and dynamic movement within their music.For me, quartal harmony on guitar is all about comping outside the key and finding ways to bring it back home. It’s almost like turning comping into a game—listening carefully to the soloist, reacting to their phrases, and complementing their musical ideas in unexpected ways. It’s a playful, interactive process that helps you stay present in the moment, making each performance unique.You can also take it further by comping on your own during your solo, using quartal shapes to build tension, explore new territory, and eventually resolve it all. This concept works just as well whether you’re accompanying another player or flying solo during your own improvisation.
