In the book of Deuteronomy we discover much more than a collection of antiquated rules and commands. The book is a series of sermons, given by Moses, of the history of the Israelites as they are poised to enter the Promised Land to possess it. God has chosen the Israelites as His own people and made a covenant with them, but they repeatedly break it. God’s people fail to love their God. More importantly, they fail to love Him in the way He dictates. That instruction is given to them in the pages of Deuteronomy as Moses tells them again and again to “love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:4). Not only does this book stipulate what it means to love God, it also overflows with descriptions of the character of God. His people are incapable of loving obedience, but Deuteronomy offers hope for their future. A promise is made of the raising up of another prophet like Moses, Jesus Christ, who will speak God’s words to His people (Deuteronomy 18:18) and a time when God will circumcise the hearts of His people so that they are at last able to love and obey Him with all their hearts, souls, and might (Deuteronomy 30:6).
