- Silicon Dioxide Powder by LFA Tablet Presses s a pharmaceutical-grade glidant and anti-caking agent designed to enhance manufacturing efficiency. Amorphous colloidal silicon dioxide (silica), is an inert excipient; meaning it will not react to or interfere with other active ingredients. It is generally recognized as safe GRAS, or generally recognized as safe, making it acceptable for pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic products. In pharmaceutical applications, silicon dioxide works as glidant by reducing the friction between a dry mixture's particles; allowing them to flow smoothly and disperse evenly. This improves the powder flow and distribution of fine powders that often move poorly through tablet presses and capsule filler systems of all speeds. By introducing silicon dioxide to your formula, the likelihood of experiencing tablet and capsule weight variations is reduced. Silicon dioxide is highly porous and hygroscopic, or water-absorbing, making it applicable for anti-caking. It works in dry formulations by absorbing trace quantities of moisture that can cause particles to clump or stick to manufacturing equipment. This is useful when using moisture sensitive APIs, or active pharmaceutical ingredients. Many ingredients are kept shelf-stable by silicon dioxide due to its water-absorbing function. This is why it can also be found in dry seasonings, spices, and cosmetics. Only a small amount of silicon dioxide is need in a formulation. This ranges from 0.1 to 2 percent of your total blend.
