Infrared filters, sometimes called IR filters or heat-absorbing filters, are designed to allow medium-infrared wavelengths while blocking visible light. They are often used in light devices with incandescent bulbs (such as slides and overhead projectors) to prevent unwanted heating.
There are also filters that are used in solid state (CCD or CMOS) video cameras to allow IR due to the high sensitivity of many camera sensors to light in the near infrared. These filters usually have a blue tint to them because they also sometimes block some of the light coming from UV light and visible from shorter wavelengths.
Digital cameras are usually equipped with IR filters to prevent unnatural images. IR-transmission (by the way) filters, or factory removal of IR filters, are commonly used in infrared photography to let infrared light through and block visible and ultraviolet light. These filters appear black to the eye, but are transparent in with an IR sensitive device.
